Trolly Stop History
In 1976, B.C. Hedgepath opened the very first Trolly Stop. The original store is called Station 1, as it was located on the first stop of the trolley line in Wrightsville Beach—and is still located there today. Until 1935, the only way to get in and around Wrightsville Beach was by walking, or taking the Trolley Line.
After a year, Mr. Hedgepath sold the store to Ron and Winnie Krueger. Ron and Winnie served hot dogs to the coastal community for the next 19 years, building the brand with tasty hot dogs, fresh ingredients, and “mom and pop” charm.
Keeping the tradition alive, Ron and Winnie sold the Trolly Stop to Rick and JoDeane Coombs in 1996. Rick and JoDeane opened Trolly Stops in Carolina Beach in 1998, Front Street in Historic Downtown Wilmington in 1999 and Southport in 2000. After the passing of his wife JoDeane, Rick remained the owner of the Trolly Stop stores until the incorporation and subsequent franchising of the business. Rick remains the owner of the franchisor Stock Dogs Inc., and of location operator/manager Trolly Stop Hotdogs, Inc.
Most Trolly Stop stores are now franchisee-owned and operated. To date, there are 4 Trolly Stop locations: Wrightsville Beach, Fountain Drive – Wilmington, Southport, and Chapel Hill.
The Trolly Stop Experience
When you walk in, you’re greeted with a smile and a “Hello” and are served food made from fresh ingredients, all made to order. We make our own chili, coleslaw & baked beans. We use fresh cut tomatoes, onions, green peppers and cucumbers. All condiments are vegetarian with the exception of the all-beef chili.
Our hot dog options include:
– Trolly Dog Beef & Pork “Traditional Southern Dog”
– All Beef Dog “Northern Dog” – Gluten-free
– Fat-free Turkey Dog – Smoked Turkey Breast Meat
– Vegetarian Soy Protein, 0 grams fat, Light Life Smart Dog
We also have our All Pork Smoked Sausage.
Our hot dog styles and names have been around for generations, such as the Surfer Dog: your choice of any dog served with mustard, cheese, and baco’ bits. Our latest addition is the Mexican Dog. Made with a Carolina Pork Sausage Dog, 2 strips of bacon, salsa, cheese, onions, and jalapenos.
Varying locations serve batter dipped fries, our juicy cheeseburgers, and our delicious cheesesteaks. Ice Cream is also available at certain locations.
Our Trolly Stop Hot Sauce
Along with our freshly made sides, we have a handcrafted secret sauce that has been a secret since our opening in 1977! Our own “Trolly Stop Hot Sauce” is a citrus based sauce that is a unique blend of spicy with a touch of sweet. We developed it 10 years ago and it is available for purchase at all of our stores and sold locally at Lowes Food Stores and the Robert’s Grocery Store at Wrightsville Beach.
